July 9, 2006 Update July 13 Presentation on the Lake Stabilization, Rain Garden Planning, Big Dig and other Lake Shore Projects Done, Publicity, and Grant Writing Planning Don’t miss the public presentation on Thursday, July 13, 2006 at Chez Paree at 7:00 PM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Recommendations for Lake Stabilization Solution will be discussed!   This is a very important meeting to attend to hear the engineering recommendations on how to sustain the lake level. Dale Jacobson from Jacobson Helgoth Consultants will present the recommendations for the Lake Stabilization Solution to the public. Bring your friends and neighbors to hear what the recommendations will be. This study was funded jointly by the Cities of Omaha and Carter Lake.  Sunday July 16th -- Rain Garden Planning meeting at 4:00 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------------- We need people who can help get plants and bedding materials for the rain gardens. The next planning session will be on Sunday, July 16 at 4:00 at Pam Christenson’s house at 174 Carter Lake Club. We will have preliminary designs for the first two rain gardens to be constructed in the Club Park. Bring your ideas and energy to help plan the construction. There will be a total of four to be built along the lake shore. The BIG DIG is done! ------------------------------ The lagoon to the east of Mabrey Park is full of water! The lagoon was dug out and filled with water in just two weeks! The ski club has their docks in place and two home owners have already armored their shorelines with rip rap. Other Lake Shore Projects -------------------------------------- Wave Crest Park has a sandy beach, sod, benches and trash receptacles. The lake access at 8th and R Street now has grass and benches. The Club Park grading and has moved east to the first storm water run off. This is where we are building the first rain garden. A big THANK YOU goes to the City of Carter Lake, Pottawattamie County, Iowa DNR and the Iowa West Foundation for the funds to complete this important shoreline work. Great press for the Carter Lake Community Day Parade Saturday, June 24, 2006 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Channel 42 and Channel 7 covered the rainy day parade. Both the Omaha World Herald and Council Bluffs Nonpareil had articles and pictures about the parade and boat floats on Sunday, June 25, 2006. I have posted the news clippings to our web site. Swanson Russell Associates, Advertising and Public Relations firm, are the ones to thank for the press releases and getting the news coverage. Thanks to this team of professionals! Watershed Improvement Review Board Grant ------------------------------------------------------------- Hillary Parker, Mayor Kramer, Doreen Mowery, Ron Rothmeyer, Kevin Seevers, and Jeanne Eibes met on Thursday, June 29 to brainstorm on projects that could possibly be funded by this grant. We are looking at putting in a wet lands buffer on the lake side of the golf course and getting additional funding for rain garden construction and signage. Jeanne and Hillary met to start the first draft of the grant proposal. The next meeting of the grant planning group will be on Wednesday, July 12 at 5:00 at City Hall. Carter Lake Watershed Technical Advisory Team ------------------------------------------------------ The team of technical recourses met on June 28 and will meet again on July 20. Co. SWCD; and Steve Tonn, Douglas/Sarpy Counties Extension. The group is planning a Stakeholder Meeting in late September when the public will be invited to discuss concerns about the lake. What’s New at www.carterlakepreservation.org? --------------------------------------------------------- “Monthly Meetings” -- Board Member, Jan Petersen, recapped some of the information that was presented at the May 11, 2006 CLPS meeting when Mike McGhee -- Iowa DNR, Harold Flatoen -- City of Omaha Public Works, David Roth -- Eppley Airport Authority and Dale Jacobson -- Professional Engineer made presentations about the history of Carter Lake watershed. “Watershed Planning” web page was added with links to technical information about the lake. “Directors and Advisors” now has names of your advisors added to the page. “In the News” has the Community Day Parade news paper articles.
