April 17 Update April 8th Lake Clean Up and the County Board of Supervisors Spring Lake Clean UP ---------------------------- The April 8th Clean UP was a huge SUCCESS! Approximately 300 volunteers removed trash, tires and metal from the lake. They filled 3-40 foot containers with trash, one 20 cubic yard container of metal, and one 20 cubic yard full of over 200 tires. The newsletter covering this event will be published and distributed by the end of May. Larry and Julie Curd, residents of Carter Lake, and the Gallup Corporation are contributing to the creation of this newsletter. $50,000 for Carter Lake ------------------------------ Paul Shomshor has included Carter Lake in the Iowa Quality Improvement Funds portion of the Infrastructure Appropriations Bill, House File 2780. $50,000 is a line item identified for “Lake Improvement feasibility study and restoration project, partnering with Nebraska, Omaha and the City of Carter Lake” Thank you Paul! We need to see this bill passed through the Iowa Senate. The money will be allocated as a part of the 2007 appropriations. We are keeping our fingers crossed. Pottawattamie Board of Supervisors comes to Carter Lake City Hall ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Board of Supervisors held their April 13 meeting at the Carter Lake City Hall. Loren Knauss, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors has become one of our best supporters. He is working with the county budget to provide financial support for some of the city’s lake projects. He is also helping to make contacts for us and to assist in networking with other associations and government agencies to help with our lake restoration projects. Jeanne Eibes, Kevin Seevers, and Russ Kramer made presentations to the Board of Supervisors. If you missed the meeting, you can get a copy of the video from the Carter Lake Library. CLPS Presentation to the Pott County Board of Supervisors on April 13 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Jeanne Eibes made a presentation about the work CLPS today and plans for 2006 – 2008. Kevin Seevers, West Pottawattamie Soil and Water Conservation District -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin Seevers gave an update on the Development Grant work he is doing and how he is working with the Nebraska DEQ in getting the two states to work together on the watershed planning activities. There will be a meeting on April 26 with the technical teams of both states to discuss the Watershed Planning Process activities. City of Carter Lake Plans for the Lake --------------------------------------------- Russ Kramer presented the five lake projects the city of Carter Lake has planned in 2006. The projects are as follows: 1) Carter Lake Club Park: Armoring the shoreline and additional landscaping along with four rain gardens in the park. 2) Mabrey Park improvements: Lagoon beside the park is so shallow that it is now dry so the city plans to dig out the lagoon and sell the dirt to the Omaha Tribe Indians property in Carter Lake. 3) Wave Crest Park improvements: Armoring the shoreline and adding a beach area. 4) Additional Lake Access at 8th and R Street in Carter Lake: Building up of the shoreline and armoring will be done. There will be additional parking for people to use this area for lake access. 5) Mabrey Park Fishing Jetty: A 100’ x 40’ fishing jetty will be constructed using the concrete from the sidewalk removed from the Carter Lake Club Park. The City of Carter Lake hopes to complete these projects in 2006. Donations are now being accepted ----------------------------------------- The Carter Lake Preservation Society has a 2006 fund raising goal to raise $200,000 in private funds from individuals and lake property owners. This money will be used as a match for grant applications to pay for the lake recharge solution. We need your financial support in two ways… as a member and as a capital contributor. Please make your donation now. These funds will be used in 2006-2007 to build the lake recharge solution. Please complete the attached member/donor application and send it to Joan Harder.
